Copenhagen Fashion Week will ban exotic skins

From next year, Copenhagen Fashion Week will ban the presentation of collections containing exotic furs or feathers. In doing so, the event becomes the most high-profile event on the fashion calendar, taking a stand against increasingly controversial material, The Business of Fashion reported.
In the past few years, brands such as Chanel and Burberry and regional fashion weeks such as Melbourne, Helsinki and Stockholm have introduced similar bans. But alligator bags and python heels are still not subject to the same taboo as genuine leather, which has been abandoned by a far greater number of brands and event planners.
Copenhagen's move is part of a wider tightening of sustainability standards for brands participating in the city's fashion week. The Danish capital has carved out a strategic niche for itself as a leader in sustainable fashion, introducing a set of minimum environmental requirements that brands must meet to show their collections in 2020, including a ban on natural leather.
They went into effect last year, and now the organization is looking to make even more progress. Along with the new ban on collections that contain fur and feathers from wild animals, brands will have to show that more of their products are made from more sustainable materials, that they are responsibly sourced and that they design to be able to be repaired and recycled, among other measures.
Copenhagen Fashion Week will work closely with brands to help them meet the new demands by providing them with webinars and other support, said Copenhagen Fashion Week CEO Cecilia Thorsmark. The new standards will enter into force from the beginning of next year./BGNES
