A well-known name in boxing reinforced Kubrat Pulev's staff before the match with Mahmoud Charr in Sofia. Coach Uli Wegner will again stand next to the Bulgarian boxer. The information was revealed in a German "Bild" online publication.
Pulev will face Charr in a World Boxing Association (WBA) world title match on March 30.
The 81-year-old Wegner will arrive in the country for the final days of preparations and will be in Cobra's corner during the fight.
"At the moment it is not possible for me to be next to him, on the ground. But I will look after Kubrat in the last important phase of preparation 10 days before the fight," he told Bild.
"Right now is very important. Every athlete is different. Someone needs more training, someone else needs to recover muscles before the match. You need a lot of experience to understand," the specialist added.
"In Arena Sofia 14 000 fans will cheer Pulev. Wegner, on the other hand, will shout the commands at ringside. The iconic trainer is still one success short of becoming world heavyweight champion. And now he wants to achieve it with Kubrat," writes Bild.
Pulev has been training under Wegner since January 2015 and has achieved as many as 8 consecutive victories - against George Arias (Brazil) on October 17, 2015, Maurice Harris (USA) on December 5, 2015, Derek Chisora (Great Britain) on May 7, 2016, Samuel Peter (Nigeria) on December 3, 2016, Kevin Johnson (USA) on April 28, 2017, Huey Fury (UK) on October 27, 2018, Bogdan Dinu (Romania) on March 23, and Rydell Booker (USA) on November 9, 2019.
The loss to Anthony Joshua in the world heavyweight title fight followed. A fight Wegner did not attend because he was fighting for his life at the time in intensive care in a hospital in Germany after contracting COVID during his final camp with Kubrat in Bulgaria. He then had to recover from a broken femur and endure 7 surgeries. "Bild reports that the specialist has also recently undergone heart surgery. / BGNES
