The famous Bulgarian journalist Ivan Garelov passed away

Sad news! After prolonged treatment, bulgarian journalist Ivan Garelov died this morning.

The long-time host of the "Panorama" program was being treated at "Pirogov" hospital, where he was admitted on July 18 as an emergency after a brain injury. The 81-year-old journalist was initially admitted to the Burgas District Hospital, but due to the deterioration of his condition, a decision was made to transfer him to Sofia.

BGNES reminds that Ivan Garelov was born on February 6, 1943 in the village of Smilec, Pazardzhik region. Graduated from Sofia State University with a degree in journalism. Since 1972, he has been working at BNT as a reporter.

Ivan Garelov became famous as the presenter of the "Panorama" show on BNT in the 1980s and 1990s. In it, he interviewed all the leading Bulgarian politicians and intellectuals during that period. He became famous with the phrase: "The time and place of the meeting are known".

Garelov is a recognized connoisseur of Greece and Bulgarian-Greek relations. He has interviewed a number of Greek statesmen, including Prime Ministers Constantine Karamanlis, Andreas Papandreou, Konstantinos Mitsotakis /father of the current Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis/, the head of state of Cyprus Archbishop Makarios, the Minister of Culture and world-famous singer and actress Melina Mercouri etc.

He remained at the head of "Panorama" for 21 years, at the beginning of the new millennium he transferred to "Nova TV", which at that time became the property of Greek tycoon Minos Kyriakou.

Garelov is also the author of a series of documentaries, the most famous of which is his film about Cambodia after the victory over the Khmer Rouge. The Bulgarian television crew was the first to enter the country devastated by Pol Pot's genocide.

Last year, the journalist's wife Donka Stamboliyska died after a short illness.
