The Archbishop of Canterbury: Patriarch Neophyte was an important spiritual leader

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, spiritual head of the Anglican Church, offered his condolences for the death of the Bulgarian Patriarch Neofit, reported BGNES.

"I am very sorry to learn of the death of His Holiness Patriarch Neophyte. I know how important he was as a spiritual leader and figure to many of your fellow citizens and I am sure he will be greatly missed,” the letter said.

Archbishop Welby will pray for Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

"I would be very grateful if you would convey my condolences to the members of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in London and to the clergy at the Patriarchal Church of St. Alexander Nevsky in Sofia," his letter, sent to the Bulgarian Embassy in the United Kingdom, said.

BGNES reminds that today, when it is also the second day of mourning in memory of His Holiness, we will say goodbye to the head of our church.

From 9:30 a.m., a funeral service will be held for St. Liturgy and funeral service. The mortal remains of the blessed Patriarch will be transported from the Patriarchal Cathedral "St. Alexander Nevsky" to the Metropolitan Cathedral "St. Sunday", where they will be laid next to the grave of Exarch Joseph, as was the desire of Patriarch Neophyte during his lifetime.

The Saint Nedelya Church is one of the emblematic ones in Sofia, dedicated to the Holy Great Martyr Nedelya. It was there that the late Bulgarian Patriarch and Sofia Metropolitan Neofitus wished to be buried.

His Holiness the Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan Neophyte of Sofia died at the age of 78 on March 13, 2024. The Bulgarian Patriarch was admitted to hospital at the end of November 2023 due to lung disease. /BGNES
