Over 125,000 Bulgarians celebrate the name day of Epiphany - Jordanov Den

Jordanov Den is the Bulgarian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany. In Bulgaria, Epiphany is celebrated as the day that Jesus Christ was baptized in the River Jordan by St. John the Baptist.

A total of 125,394 Bulgarians celebrate the name day of Jordanov Den, according to the statistics of the National Statistical Institute. In total, the men who have to feast on Jordanov Den are 66,954, and the ladies - 58,440.

According to the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria (NSI) data, last year a total of 143,185 men bore the name Georgi in our country.

The second most popular name is Ivan, and in 2023 there were 130,551 people with this name.

Dimitar remains in third place - 104,856 Bulgarians are named in this way.

Among female names, the most preferred is Maria (102,050), followed by Ivanka (48,639) and Elena (47,918).

And in 2023, the most newborn boys were named Alexander - a total of 828 babies, making it the most preferred name among parents of boys for another year.

With almost the same result is the name Georgi - 822 newborn boys were baptized with this name. The name Kaloyan remains in third place - 611 babies.

For another year, the most common name for newborn girls is Victoria - a total of 589 children were named this way.

The names Maria (537 girls) and Sofia (480 girls) are next.

According to NSI statistics, in 2024, on the main Christian holidays, more than 3.2 million people will celebrate a name day. Of these, 1,689,312 were men, while 1,576,905 were women.

The largest number of names will be on Palm Sunday, which this year falls on April 28 - 343,113. Then everyone who bears the name of a flower, tree or plant celebrates.
