Netherlands agrees to allow Bulgaria to join Schengen

The Dutch government has agreed to Bulgaria joining Schengen.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov announced that positive news was expected from the Netherlands on Bulgaria and Romania joining Schengen.

From Brussels, where he is visiting, he clarified that there was a meeting of the Dutch government today where a decision on the case was taken.

It will be submitted to the country's parliament, which has the final say.

"The final decision to lift the veto has to be taken by the Dutch Parliament. This will happen next week, if all is well," Denkov explained.

The prime minister stressed that to make this possible, "quite a difficult road has been travelled in recent months".

"The laws adopted in the National Assembly, the work on the lifting of the special monitoring mechanism for Bulgaria, which is related to the rule of law, the positive results of the mission, which was in November in Sofia, with the participation of the Netherlands and Austria," the prime minister explained.

In his words, negotiations with Austria are ongoing. At the moment, different options were being discussed on what such a solution would look like.
