Early this morning in the center of the Bulgarian capital, the dismantling of the monument to the Soviet army, which for many Bulgarians is considered a symbol of the Soviet occupation of the country, began, BGNES reported.
Dismantling has begun with the removal of the figures from the huge pedestal, and then the removal of the rest of the structure will begin.
The regional governor of Sofia, Yara Todeva, announced that "everything will be described on the spot." According to her, the removal was due to "cracks in the figures of the monument".The monument will be moved to the Museum of Socialist Art.
There is a heavy police and gendarmerie presence around the monument.
The Bulgarian Socialist Party has officially declared itself against the dismantling./BGNES
