In 2023, 20,400 people lost their lives in road accidents in the EU, a decrease of 1% compared to 2022. This represents 46 deaths per million inhabitants, according to the final death toll figures released today by the EC on European roads for 2023, reported by the EU.
In the overall ranking, Sweden and Denmark continue to have the safest roads, with 22 and 26 deaths per million inhabitants respectively, while Bulgaria and Romania, despite improvements, have reported the highest rates with 82 and 81 deaths per million inhabitants respectively in 2023 Mr.
Currently, around 400 people die every week in road accidents on European roads. The EU is working to achieve 'zero deaths' by 2050. The annual number of road deaths almost halved between 2001 and 2010, but progress has slowed since then.
Although the long-term trend shows a 10% reduction compared to 2019, the current rate of reduction falls short of the EU's interim target of halving road deaths and serious injuries by 2030, which requires an annual reduction of 4, 5%. | BGNES
