Archaeologists begin uncovering building with floor mosaic at Heraclea Syntytica

The uncovering of a building with a floor mosaic in Heraclea Syntytica has begun.

"This is the first time since we have been exploring the city that we have come across a mosaic floor," said team leader Prof. Dr. Ludmil Vagalinski (NAIM-BAS). It is not a dwelling, but a public Roman building located in the northeast corner of the forum. It is possible that it turned out to be a temple. Nearby last year we found a large votive tablet of the Thracian Horseman. But it is too early to say for sure what the purpose of the building was, Prof. Vagalinski.

BGNES recalls that Bulgarian archaeologists from the team of Prof. Dr. Lyudmil Vagalinski (NAIM-BAS), discovered a second statue in the large canal of Heraclea Syntyca near the town of Petrich on September 20.

The second statue, but without the head, was found at the entrance of the Cloaca Maxima, but this time on the right - unlike the one found at the beginning of July, which was next to the left wall of the canal.

The second statue is also of a naked man, but lying on his eyes, there is a cape on the left shoulder.

"The statue is from the same period as the previous one - the beginning of the new era, it has a cloak, but at this stage it only goes so far," Prof. Vagalinski.

According to him, the statue is of a socially important person.

BGNES also recalls that the statue, which archaeologists discovered in Heraclea Sintica in the summer is located in the Historical Museum in Petrich, where it can be viewed by visitors. It is assumed that the statue is of a ruler who lived at the beginning of the new era, but it is not yet known who is depicted on it. | BGNES
