An expert mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) arrives in Bulgaria. The mission team will discuss the development of the economy and the implemented policies with the Bulgarian authorities, meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Bulgarian National Bank, other state institutions, representatives of the private sector, and non-governmental organizations.
The mission's visit will continue until March 19, when the conclusions of the meetings will be announced.
BGNES recalls that at the beginning of February, the managing director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, called on the governments of the world to work to restore the fiscal buffers exhausted due to the pandemic, the accumulation of debt, high interest rates, and the increased cost of debt servicing. "We don't know what the future will bring. And we learned an important lesson from COVID and the days when the war in Ukraine started - that countries with strong fundamentals are better able to withstand shocks," said the IMF managing director. Her advice to governments is to close loopholes in tax systems and assess the quality of the existing public expenditures./BGNES
