A day of reflection ahead of Sunday's local elections in Bulgaria

The Saturday before the local vote is a day for reflection. Traditionally, election campaigning is not allowed on this day. According to the Election Code, it is not allowed to publish data from sociological surveys, from public opinion polls, as well as from exit polls on the results and attitudes of voters to support a certain party or coalition until the end of election day. The ban also applies to profiles on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Viber, YouTube, etc. media service providers.

The elections will be held in two rounds - the first round on October 29, in which the mayor and municipal council are elected, and the second round on November 5 for mayors in settlements where none of the candidates was elected with more than 50% of the submitted votes valid votes in the first round.

We won't be voting by machine this time. The Central Election Commission (CEC) decided two days before the elections that voting would be done only with paper ballots.

58 parties and 9 coalitions will participate in the vote on October 29. This time, the participants in the local elections are fewer compared to 2019, when Bulgarians could choose between 59 parties and 7 coalitions. A little over 6 million and 48 thousand are the voters included in the preliminary lists for the local elections.

3606 types of bulletins have been produced. There are 265 types of ballots for municipal councilors and the same number for mayors of a municipality, 35 types of ballots for mayor of a region, and 3041 for mayors of town halls.

The mandate of all mayors, municipal councilors, mayors of regions and mayors of town halls is four years. In the municipal administration, there are also villages with smaller town halls in which there are deputy mayors, but this is not an electable position and they are appointed by order of the mayors of larger settlements. Thus, in some municipalities, voters will vote four times at once - for mayor, for municipal councilors, for district mayors, and for mayors of settlements (villages).

On Sunday, the polls will open at 7.00 a.m. and voting will continue until 8.00 p.m., or until the number of people waiting to vote runs out. /BGNES
