56% of Bulgarians support NATO membership

56% of Bulgarians would vote to remain in NATO, 28% would vote to leave and 16% have no opinion on the matter.

This is stated in NATO's annual report for 2023, presented today by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, reports BGNES.

The document is published on the bloc's official website.

According to the report, support for the military alliance among member states has grown since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On average, 70% of citizens in the alliance countries support their countries' membership in NATO, while only 11 % are opposed. By comparison, a year earlier support was 62 %.

The majority of Bulgarians believe that NATO takes good care of the security of allies 59%, against 19% who think the opposite.

The report says Bulgaria ranks 13th in defence spending as a percentage of GDP at 1.87%.

The ranking is topped by Poland with nearly 4 percent (3.92%). / BGNES
