The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the implementation of the agreements by Serbia is key to continuing the dialogue with Kosovo.
Von der Leyen explained in Belgrade at a joint press conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic that "de facto" recognition of Kosovo actually means implementing the agreement agreed in Ohrid.
"What it is about - the implementation of the Ohrid Agreement, which provides for various steps that include the recognition of Kosovo's documents and institutions by Serbia, and what goes along with the creation of the Union of Serbian Municipalities (UMS), which must be implemented from Kosovo," Von der Leyen said, trying to clarify what the de facto recognition of Kosovo's independence meant, which she had mentioned the previous day in Pristina.
Von der Leyen emphasized that this would pave the way for the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo, which, as she emphasized, is a necessary precondition for the European path.
Normalization between Serbia and Kosovo is necessary, she added, condemning the brutal attack in the village of Banska on September 24 and adding that the perpetrators must be held accountable.
