Russian tourists led the ranking with 4.55 million visitors in the January-August period, followed by Germany with 4.38 million and the United Kingdom with 3.1 million tourists, Anatolian News Agency reported.
Istanbul, Turkey's largest city and a major tourist destination, received 34.3 percent of all foreign tourists, or a total of nearly 12.27 million people. The Mediterranean seaside resort of Antalya was the next city, attracting 11 million foreign tourists, while Edirne, located in northwestern Turkey near the borders with Bulgaria and Greece, welcomed 3.36 million people.
In August alone, the number of foreign tourists visiting the country reached 6.82 million, a year-on-year increase of 2.47%.
