Turkey has blocked access to the social media site Instagram, the national communications authority said without giving an explanation. This happened after a high-ranking Turkish official accused the American company of censorship, AFP reported.
Communications authority BTK announced that "instagram.com has been blocked by decision since August 2" without adding further details.
Many users living in Turkey complained on social network X that they could not update their Instagram feed.
The director of communications for the Turkish presidency, Fahrettin Altun, attacked Instagram on July 31, accusing the social network of "preventing people from posting condolence messages for martyr Haniya."
Ismail Haniyeh, the political head of the militant Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and a close ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was killed in Tehran on July 31 in an attack blamed on Israel.
"This is a very clear and obvious attempt at censorship," Altun wrote in X. | BGNES
