The new ambassador of the European Union in Skopje, Michalis Rokas, took office

The new ambassador of the European Union in Skopje, Michalis Rokas, presented his letters of credence to Macedonian Foreign Minister Timcho Mutsunski, BGNES reported.

The Greek diplomat succeeds David Geer.

Mutsunski said that Roxas' diplomatic mission begins at an extremely important moment for the country's European future.

The minister thanked for the "continuous support of the European Union for the progress of the reform processes, the stability and prosperity of the country" and emphasized "the readiness of Skopje for further deepening of the mutual partnership based on common values ​​and interests".

The meeting discussed the recently adopted Growth Plan for the Western Balkans of 6 billion euros.

BGNES reminds that the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, announced the nomination of Roxas in April this year. Prior to his current appointment, Roxas was Head of the EU Delegation to Malaysia, a position he held since December 2020.

He has 30 years' experience in foreign affairs, having joined the European Commission's Directorate-General for External Relations in 1994. Roxas was the EU Chargé d'affaires and Head of Delegation to New Zealand. He also held a position in the European External Action Service (EEAS).

Rokas was born in September 1964 in Athens. He has a bachelor's degree in economics and postgraduate studies in European economics. Besides his native Greek, he speaks English, French and German. | BGNES
