The Greek coast guard rescued 75 migrants near the town of Pylos

The Greek coast guard said it had rescued 75 migrants in the area where one of the worst shipwrecks of migrants in the Mediterranean occurred last year, AFP reported.

The migrants were on board a sailboat southwest of the Peloponnese coastal town of Pylos and will be taken to the port of Kalamata. The coast guard did not mention the nationalities of the migrants.

In June 2023, a rusted and overloaded trawler sailing from Tobruk in Libya, believed to be carrying more than 750 people, sank southwest of Pylos.

104 people survived, but more than 600 people are believed to have died.

Dozens of survivors have filed a criminal complaint against the Greek coast guard, claiming it took hours to respond despite warnings from the EU border agency Frontex and the NGO Hotline. | BGNES
