The constituent assembly of the new parliament in North Macedonia has begun

The session is being chaired by the oldest MP, Merita Kolci-Kojjajiku.

The most important item on the agenda is the election of the president of the National Assembly. Afrim Gashi of the incumbent Albanian opposition coalition, Vredi (Vlen), is likely to be elected speaker. This was confirmed by the party working groups that negotiated a new government on 27 May.

The constituent session, according to the new Rules of Procedure, lasts a maximum of three days, and the assembly is constituted by verifying the credentials of the elected deputies and electing the president.

The 120-seat Parliament is a parliament, but only 118 deputies, whose mandates have already been confirmed by the State Electoral Commission, are present at the first sitting. Appeal procedures are still ongoing for two seats after a re-vote was required in 7 polling stations on 22 May.

In the new parliamentary composition, the coalition "Your Macedonia" led by VMRO-DPMNE has the most deputies - 58, the coalition "For European Future" of the Social Democratic Union /SDSM/ has 18 deputies, the coalition "European Front" of the Democratic Union for Integration /DSI/ also has 18 deputies, the Coalition "Harm" - 14, the Left Party - 6, and ZNAM - 6 deputies. / BGNES
