Greek police suspect that the explosion that took place in an Athens apartment in the early afternoon of October 31 may be linked to a bomb belonging to terrorists. One man died and a woman was seriously injured in the incident, Kathimerini reported.
The Anti-Terrorism Department will lead the investigation after a huge amount of explosive material was found in the apartment. Police have not yet identified the dead man and the injured young woman. Officers who searched the apartment found a gun.
Initially, it was assumed that the explosion was caused by a leaking gas cylinder in the apartment, on the third floor of a block of flats in the Ambelokipi district of Athens. However, firefighters investigating the scene have determined that the explosion took place in the living room, not the kitchen.
No gas cylinders were found in the apartment, which investigators said indicated that the bomb may have exploded accidentally in the hands of the people in the apartment.
At last reports, authorities were working to identify the dead man and the seriously injured young woman. The owner of the apartment told authorities that the apartment was rented by his son, who is currently living in the Netherlands. Witnesses said the explosion was powerful and could be heard from a distance. Neighbors told police that a second woman used the apartment frequently and that she had her own set of keys. | BGNES
