"The Social Democratic Party (SDP) won the parliamentary elections in Romania with 26.10% of the vote, exit polls show, BGNES reported.
The "Alliance for the Unification of Romanians" (AOR) won 19.20%, the "National Liberal Party" (NLP) 15.90% and the reformist opposition party "Union for the Salvation of Romania" (SSR) 15.60%, according to exit polls conducted by the Centre for Urban and Regional Sociology - CURS.
The parliamentary threshold is crossed by SOS Romania with 5.50%, the nationalist Young People's Party with 5.50% and the Democratic Union of Hungarians with 5%.
After the preliminary results came out, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said:
"I understand the responsibility we have towards Romania. I think we should all look at today's result. This is an important signal that Romanians have sent to the political class. Basically, let us continue to develop the country with European money, but at the same time defend our identity, national values and faith. We must focus on the correct counting of every vote in every section," the prime minister said at the SPD headquarters.
NDP President Ilie Boloyan said the Liberals are ready to participate in a governing coalition. The basis for discussion should be their proposed reform agenda.
"As far as the outcome of the vote is concerned, as you can see, there will be a parliament that will include several parties, and I think it will inevitably become a question of forming a governing coalition. The NPL is ready to participate in such a coalition in such a way that we can be a modernizing factor for our country, and the basis for discussion will be the reform agenda that we have adopted," Boloyan said at the NPL headquarters. | BGNES
