Over 5 thousand Bulgarians at a grand parade to celebrate May 24 in Chicago

More than 5 thousand Bulgarians gathered in the Chicago suburb of Elk Grove Village for the May 24 parade, BGNES reported.

The parade, dedicated to the Day of the Bulgarian Alphabet and Culture, began at 12 o'clock with a parade of young Bulgarians. The parade continued with an exciting programme, children's corner, music and dance, delicious food, cold drinks, games and lots of fun.

Nearly 30 Bulgarian schools, kindergartens cultural centers, folklore groups and patriotic organizations took part in the parade and festival organized by the Consulate General of Bulgaria in Chicago and the Elk Grove Village City Hall.

The Consul General in Chicago Svetoslav Stankov announced that the Illinois driver's license test will soon be available in Bulgarian.

"This parade has become a symbol of unity and togetherness. 6 hours festival of Bulgarianness and I am grateful to the Bulgarian community," said Stankov.

"The opportunity to take driving tests in Bulgarian is a great victory for us," he added, concluding with a message to Bulgarians to "love each other and stay united"

By the end of the year a new translation of Aleko Konstantinov's travelogue "To Chicago and Back" will be published in a bilingual edition.

The program was attended by folklore groups and children from Bulgarian schools, and a special guest was the grande dame of Bulgarian music Yordanka Hristova. /BGNES
