The development of tourism may have overshadowed the archaeological wealth of the peninsulas of Kassandra and Sithonia in Halkidiki, but thanks to it one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Northern Greece has been discovered.
Over a thousand burials of various types and numerous finds have been discovered in recent years on the coast of Agios Ioannis in Sithonia. The excavations (2018-19 and 2020), conducted by the archaeologists of the Ephoria for Antiquities of Chalkidiki and Mount Athos, Eleni Lambrotanassi, Despoina Vovoura and Charikleia Koromila, revealed graves from the 10th to the 5th century BC, when contractors began digging in the area after purchasing the property for the construction of a new tourist site.
The burials include amphorae, funerary boxes and a sarcophagus, which testify to burial practices in the wider region of Chalkidiki from the Iron Age to the Early Classic period./BГNEС
