Cyprus has officially launched its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) for Limassol and Larnaca, marking an important step in the transition towards greener and more accessible cities.
The initiative, funded by the EU's Reconstruction and Sustainability Mechanism, aims to reduce congestion, improve public transport and promote environmentally friendly alternatives such as cycling and walking. The plans were presented at a joint event involving the European Commission's DG Reform and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works of Cyprus, Alexis Vafeades, underlined the government's commitment to creating more accessible and environmentally friendly cities, firstly by encouraging citizens to use public transport and reduce their dependence on private cars, and secondly by renewing the bus fleet with electric vehicles that do not pollute the environment.
"By investing in these viable urban mobility strategies, we ensure that our cities become accessible, livable and sustainable. The long-term impact of these projects will not only benefit the environment, but also improve the quality of life for all Cypriots," he said. | BGNES
