Former Prime Minister and President of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic has announced that an assassination attempt is being prepared against him by a neighbouring country, Montenegrin media reported.
The politician was informed that an assassination attempt would be carried out against him by an organised criminal group, after which he informed the country's security services. The competent prosecutor's office has initiated proceedings.
The police and the public prosecutor's office are taking further measures and actions in synchrony within their competence.
BGNES recalls that in 2016 an attempted coup d'état was made in Montenegro on the day of the October elections in order to divert the country from the path towards NATO and the European Union.
Two Russian citizens, Eduard Shishmakov and Vladimir Popov, eight Serbian citizens, and the leaders of the pro-Russian Democratic Front, Milan Knezevic and Andrija Mandic, prepared a violent change of government with the active support of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SCO), according to the Special Prosecutor's Office. The aim was to remove Prime Minister Milo Đukanović from power and assassinate him.
In 2020, the SPC, through its former metropolitan in Montenegro, Amfilohije, began six months of protests against Đukanović, who was the country's president at the time. He accused Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic of directly interfering in Montenegro's internal affairs in an attempt to revive "Greater Serbia." | BGNES
