The Council of the EU has officially extended the mandate of the EU Special Envoy for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Miroslav Lajčak, until January 2025. This decision, which was agreed by the member states earlier at the request of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, it's official now.
The decision was made a few months after Borrell appointed Lajcak as EU ambassador to Switzerland, where he was due to start work on September 1, immediately after his current term expires, Koha reported.
As Lajcak will continue to play the role of mediator in the dialogue for another five months, the EU wants to ensure that there is no vacuum on this issue until his successor is expected to be appointed.
The appointment of Lajcak's successor is now directly linked to the procedure for appointing new heads of the EU institutions for the next five-year term.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaia Kalas is expected to be appointed as the new High Representative for Foreign Affairs. | BGNES
