Former Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski resigned from the post of chairman of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia /SDSM/.
In accordance with the Party Charter, he initiated the convening of the SDSM Congress in order to analyze the election results and express confidence in the party bodies elected by the Congress.
"In the parliamentary and presidential elections, the SDSM suffered a defeat, which inflicted a heavy blow not only on the part of the citizens, but also on the part of the sympathizers, as well as some of the party members. Both myself and the party leadership, as well as all appointed and elected officials, including all party functionaries at the local and central levels, are responsible. In reality, no one is exempt from responsibility," Kovacevski said.
The former Prime Minister of North Macedonia called on the winners of the elections (VMRO-DPMNE) to continue on the path of European integration and stressed that blocking the road to Europe will create ethnic tension in the country.
"Blocking the road to Europe will not only lead to a significant decrease in our living standards, but will also increase ethnic tensions in the country. It will disrupt relations with our neighbors and expose us to a security risk that no one can estimate how great it might be. There is no middle ground for a country like North Macedonia. There is no game with two chairs. It is either forward or backward. The place of the North Macedonia is in NATO and in the EU. The Macedonians' place is in the EU - a place where all the other citizens of North Macedonia belong, regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliation," Kovacevski added.
BGNES reminds that VMRO-DPMNE inflicted a heavy loss on the hitherto ruling Social Democratic Union (SDSM) in the parliamentary vote that took place on May 8. Hristiyan Mitskoski's formation won 58 mandates in the 120-seat Macedonian National Assembly against only 18 for SDSM.
