Germany will increase the number of its soldiers in the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Kosovo (KFOR) to nearly 300 people, the country's army announced, BGNES reported.
"Against the deteriorating security situation in Kosovo, the Bundeswehr is increasing its commitment to the Kosovo Security Force. The German contingent will be reinforced in the spring under new leadership," the Bundeswehr website said in a statement.
The commander of the operational command, Lieutenant General Bernd Schütt, handed over the command of the German contingent from Colonel Sven Menger to Colonel Sascha Mies.
"The deployment of KFOR forces in Kosovo was, is, and remains an indispensable condition for maintaining stability in that region," Lt. Gen. Shute said at a ceremonial inspection at the KFOR force headquarters in Pristina. Participation in the mission also directly affects German security interests. "We will continue to be committed to this mission with determination," Lt. Gen. Shute said.
"Not only because we are convinced of the strategic importance of this region in the heart of Europe, but also because together we oppose national aspirations, violence and terrorism," he added. /BGNES
