"Strict compliance with international treaties is a basic principle of international law and an obvious obligation to participate in international organizations," said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yorgos Gerapetritis, sending a message to the future government of North Macedonia.
"The Prespa Agreement is an international treaty that has been ratified by law, it is absolutely binding on the parties for everything and cannot be changed unilaterally," the diplomat noted in an interview with the Greek online media NewsBomb.
"Especially for North Macedonia, the main terms of the Agreement were included in the constitution and were a condition for joining NATO," he recalled.
Gerapetritis stressed that "refraining from unilateral actions and divisive rhetoric, faithful adoption of European legislation, recognition of the supremacy of international law and full implementation of international agreements is essential to guarantee stability, security and prosperity in our region and the integration of countries candidates in the European family'.
BGNES recalls that the Prespa Treaty was signed on June 17, 2018 in the village of Nivitsi on the shore of the Great Prespa Lake by the then foreign ministers of both countries, Nikos Kodzias and Nikola Dimitrov. Prime Ministers Alexis Tsipras and Zoran Zaev were also present. The agreement ended a long-running dispute over Macedonia's name between authorities in Skopje and Athens. | BGNES
