Four migrants have died in the Aegean Sea, the Greek coastguard said. It is the latest incident of a boat sinking in recent weeks, AFP reports.
The coastguard said the bodies of three men and a woman were found near the island of Rhodes, while 25 others made it to shore.
In late October, three people died near the island of Samos. A few days earlier four people including two babies lost their lives off the island of Kos.
Rhodes is among the islands that have seen an increasing influx of asylum seekers in recent months.
Late last month, several hundred migrants pitched tents and cardboard houses outside local government offices in Rhodes town. This sparked anger among residents and local authorities.
More than 700 migrants arrived on the island in the last week of October alone, local media Rodiaki reported.
This year, the number of people fleeing war and poverty in the Mediterranean country has increased by 25%.
The UNHCR announced that 48,158 arrivals have been recorded so far in 2024, of which some 42,000 arrived by boat and 6,000 crossed the land border with Turkey. | BGNES
