Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed the ratification of Sweden's accession to NATO. The decision was published in Turkey's State Gazette, finalizing the ratification that brings the previously non-aligned country one step closer to membership in the military alliance.
BGNES reminds that the Turkish parliament ratified Sweden's application on January 23, removing a major obstacle to the Western alliance's expansion after a 20-month delay. Lawmakers voted 287-55 in favour of Stockholm. The decision was endorsed by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK), the Nationalist Action Party (NAP) and the opposition Republican People's Party (RPP). Nationalist and leftist parties in opposition voted against.
Hungary remains the only ally that has not yet ratified the Nordic nation's accession to the alliance. /BGNES
