Bulgarian PM on North Macedonia: European results cannot be achieved with non-European behaviour

Prime Minister of Bulgaria Dimitar Glavchev confirmed Bulgaria's position on the accession of the Republic of North Macedonia to the European Union, BGNES reports.

The issue was the focus of a telephone conversation between Prime Minister Glavchev and European Council President António Costa. The two spoke on the occasion of the preparation of the regular meeting of the European Council on 19 December, which will be the first one chaired by Costa.

"European results cannot be achieved with non-European behaviour," the prime minister stressed. The Bulgarian prime minister stressed that our country supports the European integration of the Republic of North Macedonia, provided that the agreements under the 2017 Good Neighbourhood, Friendship and Cooperation Treaty between the two countries are respected, as well as the implementation of key reforms related to human rights, the rule of law and good neighbourly relations.

Dimitar Glavchev was adamant that there is complete unanimity in Bulgarian society on the issue and that no Bulgarian prime minister, whether caretaker or regular, would support a position other than the one officially adopted by the National Assembly. Prime Minister Glavchev also said that Bulgaria remains committed to the European perspective of the region, but it is necessary to overcome differences through constructive dialogue and mutual respect.

During the conversation, Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev congratulated António Costa on his inauguration as President of the European Council. Mr Glavchev wished success for a strong and united European Union. For his part, António Costa congratulated the Bulgarian Prime Minister on the country's full accession to the Schengen area. Glavchev thanked for the support of all member states and European institutions. The Prime Minister confirmed that Bulgaria's recent accession to the euro area also remains an important political priority for our country.

The situation in Ukraine will be at the forefront of the leaders' discussions in Brussels. Member states will continue to support Ukraine for as long as necessary. The meeting will be an opportunity for leaders to send a united and unequivocal message of support to Ukraine for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.

EU enlargement, migration, the situation in the Middle East and EU-US relations will be other highlights at the meeting of heads of state and government in the Belgian capital. I BGNES
