According to the latest reports, 20 people have died in the floods that have affected parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), and dozens are missing.
During the night of 4/5 October, another body was found in Donja Jablanica, bringing the death toll in the town to 17. At the same time, about 40 people are missing, so it is possible that the number of dead is higher, N1 TV reported.
On 4 October it was announced that two people had died in the floods in Foinitsa, and overnight the death of one more was confirmed.
The search for missing persons is also underway in the Foinitsa area.
On 5 October, heavy rains and storms last night caused major flooding and landslides in the area of Jablanica, Konyica, Foynica, Kyseljak and Kreshevo.
The worst hit was Donja Jablanica, where, according to some Sarajevo media, the waste accumulated in the quarry caused an avalanche that buried several houses, so that entire families disappeared.
The media reports that the permits to operate this quarry are "very suspicious".
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borel expressed his solidarity with BiH and offered the bloc's help.
"The catastrophic floods in BiH have already produced several victims and many missing persons. The EU stands in solidarity with BiH. EUFOR is already helping. We are ready to provide additional assistance through the EU civil protection mechanism," Borel wrote on the X platform.
The government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bosnian-Croatian entity - ed.) has declared a state of emergency on the territory of this entity. Civil protection units, BiH armed forces and EUFOR members are providing assistance to the vulnerable population. | BGNES
