8 dead after open roof collapses at railway station in Serbia

At least 8 people have died after part of an open roof collapsed at a railway station in the Serbian city of Novi Sad, the interior minister was quoted as saying by AFP.

"Eight bodies have been found, eight people have died...two people are in hospital, one of whom is in a critical condition," Interior Minister Ivica Dacic told reporters. "The operation is still ongoing and extremely difficult. It involves more than 80 rescuers using heavy equipment," he added.

Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic promised that authorities would investigate the cause of the incident.

"We will insist on finding those responsible, those who should have ensured the safety of the structure. I express my condolences to the families of the victims. This is a Black Friday for us, for all of Serbia, for Novi Sad," Vucevic said.

Footage posted on social media showed several ambulances and fire trucks at the scene of the accident in front of the railway station. They also show two excavators digging through the pile of rubble.  Novi Sad railway station reopened in July after three years of renovation work. In some parts of the station, construction work is still ongoing.  A high-speed rail link between Novi Sad and the capital Belgrade was opened in March 2022. | BGNES
